Payson is located in the geographical center of Arizona in the Alpine region northeast of Phoenix and in between the Sierra Ancha and Mazatzal Mountain Ranges. The Tonto Natural State Park provides camping, hiking trails and horseback riding and boasts the region's largest stand of Ponderosa trees, which draws many visitors to the area. Another attraction is the Annual World—s Oldest Continuous Rodeo, traditionally held each year in the third week of August. The rodeo celebrated 122 years of rodeo sport in 2006 and holds the title for being oldest continuous rodeo in the world. There are also several golf courses in the area for those golf enthusiasts and spectators alike.
